MEET THE FLOCKERS
ONCE MET NEVER FORGOTTEN

Birds of a feather flock together so it’s perhaps no surprise that both FLOCK’s imaginative co-founders came from (escaped?) similar professional backgrounds in order to stretch their creative wings.

Janett was a successful Lawyer for fifteen years, and Sophia was a Bank Manager before running galleries and large-scale art exhibitions. When these inventive businesswomen joined forces to create Flock in 2017, their personal values of happiness, diversity and energy were in-built from the off and encapsulated in FLOCK’s emblem – Fanny the Fearless Finch. You can find out more about FLOCK’s Fanny here and the FLOCK team below…

SOPHIA NEWTON
Who are you?
I’m the boss, don’t tell Janett. Nah, who am I kidding? She’s the boss.
Where do you come from?
London by birth, Windermere by life.
What is your area of expertise?
Thinking of stuff. Coming up with ideas. Writing things down that people like reading.
What inspires you?
Average normal boring life. Supermarkets, a walk in the woods, a queue in a chip shop, it can be anything I’m one of those irritating buggers that is just genuinely happy to be alive. I write every day, usually poetry, there’s just so much to say because I think humans and life are endlessly fascinating especially the ‘boring’ bits that people often overlook.
What do you have to say about FLOCK?
What’s FLOCK? Sounds weird like some kind of cult. Count me in. I’m proud to say that FLOCK is doing its best to change things for the better. We take a thoughtful approach to events and always consider what the point of them is, what, and who they will impact. I love that I get to do something that not only makes me happy but makes others happy too, it’s a warm feeling to fall asleep on.
What are you most proud of about your work?
Firstly our ethos of creating amazing things that do good. I feel extremely lucky to have created projects that we will forever be proud of; the Wasted! charity event, Cumbria Family Business Awards and Random Acts of Kindness Treasure Hunt. Oh and I know it’s pathetic, but I still get really excited when I see our clients on the telly.
What are you most proud of outside of work?
My two children and husband are ace humans but that probably has very little to do with me! I guess the thing that helps my ‘sense of self’ the most is that I do genuinely try to live each day with kindness and creativity. Also I’m quite proud of my art collection. It’s bloody beautiful. If you ask nicely I’ll show it to you one day. Bring rum.
JANETT WALKER
Who are you?
I’m the boss. No, really. Don’t listen to a word Soph says.
Where do you come from?
I come from a land down under... well, Leeds, Leeds, Leeds actually.
What is your area of expertise?
Putting everything Soph thinks of, comes up with, and writes down, into action. Occasionally, I even come up with some of the madness myself.
What inspires you?
People who put themselves out there in a bid to make the world a better place, even if this is at great risk to both themselves and their families. Bravery and standing up for what you believe in are two hugely inspirational qualities!
What do you have to say about FLOCK?
Oh Flock off. Enough questions already. I love it, I live for it, it makes me feel like I have candy in my heels, all day every day.
What are you most proud of about your work?
I love that our work brings joy, energy and happiness to so many people. From the wrap party for ITV's production of Deep Water to the Giant Walk to School for Little Brogues, we’re able to put a smile on people’s faces...and there isn’t much better than that!
What are you most proud of outside of work?
This one’s easy: my girls! Two of them. Both ridiculously fabulous. And being a Yorkshire Jamaican (natch).
Jess
Who are you?
Jess Chadwick, Mancunian born and bred, invaded Cumbria in 2015.
What is your area of expertise?
Blogging and creating all things wordy, poetic and fun. Social Media content, love ye’olde Instagram. I’m also pretty good on the LA23NET bar.
What inspires you?
In life? Travelling and being in different cultures! I feel my most creative, relaxed and inspired when I’m exploring and always feel I come back with a fresh burst of energy and positivity. At work? The fact I can be my most creative self and...the lunch time meals (literally different every day and we always eat together)!
What do you have to say about FLOCK?
Fabulous, loco, original, caring, kindred spirits! Flock events are blummin’ insane! Fizz Fridays combined with The Power of Four will fill you with joy whilst making you cry with laughter. The Flock nest is THE best place to work and basically...I wish I was here everyday.
What are you most proud of about your work?
The sense of community Flock manages to create. I love seeing people enjoying themselves and making connections at Flock events. It’s also a good feeling getting a giggle out of someone when they read a blog or a huge sigh of relief when I crack the code with an idea!
What are you most proud of outside of work?
I’ve just started to learn the ukulele which is my fifth instrument, I absolutely love music and couldn’t imagine life without it. Oh...and the fact I can say the alphabet backwards in 3.02 seconds.
Alex
Who are you?
Freelance copywriter and social media person by day, superhero by night. But shhh...don’t tell anyone.
Where do you come from?
Born and raised in Cornwall, heard the call of the north at the age of 6, and the rest is history. Still working on my Cumbrian accent.
What is your area of expertise?
Words and pictures. More specifically, writing words to inspire and finding pictures to complement them. And then sharing these on social media to get the word out!
What inspires you?
Positive, motivated people who are always striving to be the best they can be. There’s also something (ok, lots of things) inspiring about those who stay strong under the hardest of circumstances.
What do you have to say about FLOCK?
Dynamic. Energetic. A little bit wild. FLOCK is quite simply bursting with energy, ideas and creativity and there’s never a dull moment.
What are you most proud of about your work?
The moment I realised the Cumbria Family Business Awards 2019 were trending nationwide on Twitter, having spent the evening looking extremely antisocial by never looking up from my phone. It wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t such a fantastic event and people didn’t want to talk about it, so I was also proud of the Cumbrian business community for getting behind us on social! Oh, and the time I played air hostess at LA23NET Carlisle Airport.
What are you most proud of outside of work?
Becoming a homeowner, and moving to live abroad without knowing anyone on the other end.
Wow! Wow! Wow! You rock! Well done and THANK YOU for one of the most fun evenings I’ve had. What a great night.
Andy Beeforth OBE, Chief Exec, Cumbria Community Foundation
The idea Flock had for our first anniversary event was both inspired and unique. It brought the right people to my business for the right reasons. Not only that, the event itself was seamless and professional. The guest list which Flock pulled together was astonishing and the lovely feedback I...
Sam Ashdown, Director, AshdownJones
I just wanted to drop you a quick line (I don't normally do this) to let you know how impressed I have been with the Cumbria Family Business Awards this year. All of the PR and social activity in the run up to the awards has been fantastic and really...
Elizabeth Fisher, Director, Prospus Marketing
If you ever want an event organising – Flock are your ‘go to’ team. They are THE events people.
Chris Blade, CEO, Cumbria Crystal
The event was superbly organised, the attention to detail was beautiful, but my overriding memory will be the feeling of warmth, joy and sense of community, now that really is hard to achieve!
Sarah Stables, Director, Stables & Co
The night was inspirational, emotional, uplifting. It was the perfect gig. Can we salute you all?
Catherine Connor, Director, Lovingly Artisan
I would just like to say - WOW FLOCK - over 300 followers on the Bowness and Windermere Present Facebook page, and visiting all those businesses in Windermere and Bowness - you are superwomen!! I had a quick look through the likes, shares and comments and there is a real...
Helen Belshaw, Owner, Just H Design
What an amazing evening. The atmosphere was electric.
Zoe Dawes, The Quirky Traveller
When we opened for business we needed to get the word out. Soph and Janett's enthusiasm for our property was obviously infectious as it led to being contacted by More4 after appearing in local papers and glossies. Who can deny their attention to detail delivered with huge smiles and naughty...
Joyce McGuire, Owner, Dome House
Working with Sophia and Janett is like inviting Mary Poppins and Mrs Doubtfire into your life; they sweep in full of positive energy, give everything a shake up, a lick of paint and a polish and re-present you to the world all shiny and new and full of hope and...
Janette Philips, Artist
Flock’s energy and creativity gets things done and we appreciate that their alternative approach really does bring the wow factor. Thank you! Look forward to working with you again.
